This totally free excursion is sponsored by the New York State Canal Corporation with the support of the New York State Power Authority. The hike starts at Lock number 4 in Waterloo. We will have a two hour hike starting at 1:00 pm January 7 and goes through the 12th of February. You will be communicated with before the hike to talk about possible changes due to weather.
You will get a chance to learn how this 15 foot water powered elevator moves 3.5 million gallons of water in only 10 to 12 minutes. You next head down the Canalway trail with a bit of astronomy. It is the earths position relative to the Sun that gives us winter. Next a bit of earth science, as we fine tune our Lense to where we are geographically along the canal. This being part of a larger watershed, which demonstrates the conductivity of things. Then we narrow our view to the life along the river for birds , plants, animals and insects. You learn what they do to survive. Finally we learn about humans along the canal through history.
You will be guided by one of two very talented naturalists. Both have a long list of credits after their name. Lisa has the talent of being able to identify birds by their sound and we have plenty of binoculars to help you see them. Peter is an actor , and a retired science teacher. Both have worked at the Montezuma Wildlife Center. We are certain you will love your experience.
