Every MC CERT volunteer is asked to train to become a member of the Volunteer Radio Team (MCVRT). Should Indianapolis suffer a major disaster, radio may be the only means for the CERT Command to establish communications with the Volunteers to find out who is able to respond and who needs help.
The MCVRT Level One assumes the volunteer has no prior knowledge of radio. The course had two parts. The first part discusses emergency communications, communication types, and the MC CERT Communications Plan. The second part teaches how MCVRT Level One volunteers plug into the plan, the Disaster Activation Protocol, and the various radio equipment volunteers will use. There are exercises in each part teaching skills for communicating via radio.
