The January 8th Borscht and Movie Night is a fundraiser for a 40ft 18-wheeler of humanitarian aid, Judaica, and Jewish learning resources traveling from London to Belarus. We are covering the cost of the truck, and donations are being gathered by a London synagogue. In Belarus, Jewish communities have no access to local Judaica such as the hanukiah that all of us treasure this month, nor do they have Jewish learning resources to build up community centers. Receiving the aid, the Jewish community distributes humanitarian donations such as clothes and car seats to poor families - single mothers with multiple children. Because the recipients of aid are not always Jewish, this helps stave off local anti-semitism. The film shown will be Everything is Illuminated. Appropriate for teens, it's a beautiful and funny Jewish story that takes place in Ukraine. A delicious dinner of borscht and pierogies will be served. Tickets are $18 and additional donations are welcomed.
