Literacy is one of the most significant social justice and equity issues today. Through the science of reading research, we have the opportunity to deliver on the promise of literacy for ALL. School leaders are the key change agents in making good on that promise. Districts where leaders know the research and lead the instruction experience the greatest success. This 2-day Science of Reading Symposium will provide the research as the foundation and the roadmap for instruction; the why and the how. Day 1: Tuesday, February 7 | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM Laura Stewart, Chief Academic Officer 95 Percent Group, will facilitate an interactive, deep dive into the Science of Reading. What has science taught us about how children learn to read?How do these findings help transform instructional practice?What framework can impact system-wide change and literacy success?You’ll leave Day 1 with an understanding of the principles of the Science of Reading, practical teaching techniques to put into immediate action, and a framework for system-wide change. Day 2: Wednesday, February 8 I 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM Keynote Speaker: Mary Dahlgren, Ed.D., Founder Tools 4 Reading. National LETRS Trainer & Author 9:00 AM –10:30 AM MTSS Success Story: Implementing Science of Reading Aligned Instructional Practices in Today's Classroom 10:45 AM – 12:00 PM During this session, Ken Kirby, School Improvement Specialist with Marshall County Schools in Guntersville, AL, will share how he works with district administrators and literacy coaches to implement Science of Reading aligned instructional practices to improve student outcomes. This ongoing journey includes the following: Initiating a professional learning book study where leaders were able to closely examine current MTSS practices,Identifying critical needs to improve site-based processes, and Providing high-quality instructional materials and professional development to impact reading achievement and sustain MTSS initiatives.Roundtable Panel Discussion with Literacy Leaders 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM Laura Stewart, Chief Academic Officer 95 Percent Group, will moderate a discussion about effectively implementing the Science of Reading. Learn how these leaders created environments for change in their districts and schools.
