Description
Join Greatest MINDS for Generations - A Conference & Gathering for Black Bostonians for All Ages. We invited 50 Black high school students, 50 college students, 50 young professionals, 50 parents, and 50 Black elders for a discussion on their educational experiences collectively from kindergarten to college in Boston for Black Bostonians and ways we can help the next generation achieve success and wealth. Save the Dates - Thursday, January 19th - Saturday, January 21st, 2023 LOCATIONS: Reevxs Labs and Various Sites in Dudley Square ( Soleil Restaurant, Bolling Building, Hibernian Hall, Boston Public Library - Roxbury, etc.) Generations - An Exploration of Black Education Experiences in Boston - A Multigenerational Conference for Black Bostonians Our conference will have three tracks: EDUCATION ECONOMICS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP EXPERIENCES in health, education, workforce, economics, and Black Bostonian Life Our work centers on the Black Boston-born and raised experience, while other organizations are well-meaning - we get at the root causes of the indigenous Black Bostonian's experiences who have experienced intergenerational poverty. This will be a conference/convening over three days exploring the unique educational experiences of Black Bostonians through the years. We will explore the history of busing and educational opportunities with middle and high school students as well as share the experiences of older Black Bostonians as well to pass down the history and the importance of public education in this city. Our lessons from historical activists Bruce Bolling, Mel King, Saidi Kambon, Jean McGuire, Mimi Jones, Sarah Ann Shaw as they retire and hit their 90s and have recently passed ---- to develop a new generation and cadre of leadership must emerge to take their place. It is especially important for our Black and Brown communities to get together now as we face new challenges in public education in Greater Boston. It requires that Black parents, alumni middle school and high school students, teachers, and residents work together to bring about change with a new superintendent and also forces that face our METCO program and charter schools in the Greater Boston area. In addition, we will explore the college-to-career pipeline in Boston area colleges and universities like Northeastern University, Harvard University, Simmons College, UMass Boston, and Roxbury Community College, etc. doing their part to make sure Brown and Black communities succeed in Boston through partnerships and collaborations. We plan to host these convenings over three days with a majority of the events based in Nubian Square - Roxbury, MA - the hub of the black community. The Greatest MINDS is looking for support for its Generations - An Exploration of Black Education Experiences in Boston - A Multigenerational Conference for Black Bostonians from Kindergarten To College. These community convenings and programs have been very successful in the past year and look to continue them to bring about more civic change in communities. Many of our convenings have community leaders, youth, and parents in the forefront discussing civic issues on education, voting, health, urban transportation, etc., and how to make it in Boston as a BIPOC person in Boston with limited resources (ie. $8 net worth). Our convenings have been well received by all parties including politicians, activists, youth, and parents. Again, our work centers on the Black Boston-born and raised experience, while other organizations are well-meaning - we get at the root causes of the indigenous Black Bostonians' who have experienced intergenerational poverty. All of our staff and mentors are born and raised Black Bostonians with a sincere interest in making the city respond to the needs of their families and the communities they grew up in. P.S. This was 14 years ago ----- What an honor - Lost Tapes of Thanks to my great team too. ---- Greatest MINDS Conference and Inter-Generational Dialogues in Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square Roxbury, MA in June 2008. Charlotte Golar Ritchie presents a citation from Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick at the conference for my community work, youth work, and convening. Uplift. https://www.facebook.com/chip.greenidge/videos/10104990427604871 =============================================================== Greatest MINDS is a networking organization of educators, activists, entrepreneurs, young professionals, artists, and community members. Our mission is to provide mentorship and guidance to citizens and first-generation college students seeking to become active and successful contributors to civil society by giving them access to college, career, and community networks. We achieve this by promoting intergenerational dialogue through developing programs, forums, initiatives, campaigns, and conferences that highlight the issues of race, socio-economic class, and gender identity in urban cities and on college campuses. Through our collaborative process, we work towards solving these social justice issues by developing a more democratic and inclusive economy.
