ASQ Medical Device Division (formerly Biomedical Division) Northern California Discussion Group returns to local in person only roundtable program. Topic: Disaster Prevention and Recovery Planning (with a COVID accent) For a rear view of COVID and perhaps what may be coming if the ruling powers from some nation have a similar threat cooked up for us, do we want to stay in business? Do you have a Disaster Preparedness / Recovery Plan and Policy? As a manufacturer of Life-saving Medical Device products your company must stay in production! So, is COVID Part of your Disaster Preparedness Plan now? If not, consider such a plan in your Quality Planning, specifically for COVID and other viral threats from and to your employees, visitors, facilities, suppliers – your material supply chain! And are you performing audits on your COVID Plan, documents, etc.? Can you keep the COVID or like-hazard from becoming a “hazardous situation”? For a forward-looking review of other potential disaster threats, simply think about vulnerabilities, from the most severe (most difficult to recover, and most costly), and prioritize them into (first) a Disaster Prevention Policy (the aim of your plans) and Plan (what you will do to prevent loss). Then, create a Disaster Recovery Plan (what you will do if loss occurs). Several such potential threats likely to be included in your Prevention and Recovery Plans will be discussed, including (depending on geography) Earthquakes, software loss or corruption and data system damage, hardware damage, electrical outage (and backup plans), smaller and full facility fires, tornadoes, flooding, flooding from water line breakage, hurricanes, pandemics like COVID, sabotage, including bomb threats, medical emergencies, supplier failures resulting in loss of materials, and transportation of your/supplier materials. Then 24 surprising disaster statistics. While this discussion will take only an hour, it should give you some great take-home ideas!
