EVENT DETAILS: The Sustainable Oakland Green Team is hosting a Styrofoam Drive on Saturday, April 22nd, 2023 from 9 AM - 12 PM. We are seeking volunteers to help with the following timeslots: SHIFT 1: 8:30AM - 10AM (Set up at 8:30, drive starts at 9am)SHIFT 2: 10AM - 12PMSHIFT 3: 12-1PM (Unloading the truck at recycling facility in Haskell; Must provide your own transportation)Bring your clean, dry, non-food contact Styrofoam packaging with NO ink markings, or tape to the drive for recycling. First hour is for Oakland residents only, and the following three hours will be open to all Bergen County Residents. Q: Why are we recycling styrofoam? A: Styrofoam is not only a dangerous air pollutant but also poses a great threat to humans, the environment, and animals. The worst part is that Styrofoam takes over 500 years to decompose and in the process, it leaches harmful chemicals into the environment. T Q: I have been putting this out with my regular trash. How come there isn't a way to recycle it? A: The Borough of Oakland does not currently have an 'always-on' way for residents to properly dispose of styrofoam - so it's important to ensure this material doesn't go out with regular garbage collection and is instead diverted to a collection stream where it can be recycled and repurposed.
