Our second choral and orchestra concert this season is a December event focusing on the personalities involved in the audition process for the Leipzig position in the winter of 1722. At that time the position was first offered to Georg Philipp Telemann. When Telemann turned it down, Christoph Graupner was offered the position in a second audition process. When Graupner could not get release from his position in Darmstadt, a third audition process was held. Finally the position was offered to Bach, and the rest is history. This Advent-themed concert features music from these winners in the Leipzig lottery:
Bach, Cantata 23: Du wahrer Gott und David’s Sohn (his audition cantata for the position) and Cantata 62: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland
Telemann, Cantata: Machet die Tore weit TVWV 1:1074
An instrumental work by Graupner to be chosen by the NCBO.
