Let’s play loud wild and free

Description

Too often “jazz” or any creative music is relegated to some quiet corner, in the background and innocuous; at some dinner party or suit event. How many times have you heard ‘can you play that quieter?’- or telling drummers ‘can you use brushes instead?’ I’m all about dynamics (and I love brushes!) but have you heard the Coltrane quartet? Would you tell Trane to use a thinner reed or for Elvin to play softer? No way. They just went for it. Like Zeppelin and The Who. If I needs to be quiet, it is. If it needs to be loud, let it. Now, aside from volume I want to breathe some life back into a genre relegated to the real book and ‘correctness’ where players still competitively try to cut heads -albeit quietly- and by the book. I hate the competition mind set. We’re in this life together. Let’s try to play that way. Let’s be open and daring! I’d like to travel through lots of genres whereby we can be whatever music we need to be freely. Let’s make mistakes and be messy and sculpt them into beautiful experiences. ‘Want to explore something more? Do you want to push the limits of your playing and the sonic-horizon on a journey with supportive and willing musical travelers? Me too! I’ve played with obscure sidewalk buskers, African villagers, professors, students, Grammy winners, old and young. Im down to drum with whomever. Give me a shout. I thump lots of things from lots of places. -Travis in Calais
