Description

We Remember Tyler invites you to attend the 2nd Remembrance Vigil to honor the victims of racial terror lynchings in the Tyler/Smith Co. Area. Between 1857 and 1928, 15 (maybe more) African-Americans were documented victims of racial terror lynchings in our area. These public spectacles often involved torture, mutilation, and burning. They were intended to intimidate black communities and enforce a supposed racial hierarchy and segregation. We intend to remember and dignify the lives of these lynched men. We will speak their names and communicate openly about what took place. We will also provide a prayer of confession for all peoples in attendance. The necessary conversations to advance truth and reconciliation have started throughout the community. We urge you to join in them or start a conversation at your church, workplace, or home.
