Rhythmic and melodic, Trilhos Urbanos inspires you to travel along, as their music guides you through a journey of the Brazilian Songbook. Brazilian, João Rocha a CCM graduate in composition is the quartet's pianist and cuatro player. Paula Gandara’s 1st language is Portuguese, her advocacy is singing not just the known songs but those songs that show the diversity in the Brazilian songbook. Baba Charles Miller convener and percussionist of Trihos Urbanos enjoys being a lifelong learner, sharing his love of the percussive folkloric traditions of Africa, Brazil, and Cuba. A lifelong student of percussive folkloric traditions of Africa, Brazil, and Cuba, Baba Charles Miller's studies have included travels to Cuba and Brazil to study with cultural masters of the folkloric traditions. As a cultural arts presenter, Baba Charles has collaborated with organizations to host performances by cultural masters Afro Cuba de Matanzas, Matanzas, Cuba, and The Cepedas of Puerto Rico: arts residencies with YaYa Diablo, Mali, West Africa; Bernard Woma, Ghana, West Africa, Nago Gato, Salvador, Brazil and Mistre Valu, Salvador, Brazil. Baba Charles has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and Singapore sharing his diverse percussive knowledge as an artist in resident or performer. He is the co-founder of millergardette in #WeAreWalnutHills and through the years has performed as a member of the African American Drum and Dance Ensemble, Conga School, Terra Azul, Caxia de Sol, Drums for Peace, Escole de Samba, Mambo Combo, Just Love and now Trihos Urbaos. A published author, poet, dancer, and singer, Paula Gândara is a multifaceted artist from Lisbon (Portugal) living in the USA since 2000. Dr. Gândara is a Professor of Lusophone Studies at Miami University (Oxford, OH). As a fifteen-year-old, Dr. Gândara was accepted into the Performing Arts School of Gothenburg (Sweden), having performed several times with the Dance Company of Lisbon (Portugal) under the direction of Rui Horta. As an author, Dr. Gândara has works published in the USA, Portugal, and Brazil has also received a "Nosside, International Prize of Poetry" in 2009. Paula Gândara has been performing regularly as a singer and advocate of the Brazilian and Portuguese songbooks. She performed in prestigious music festivals and venues such as the World Music Fest and the UniDiversity Festival in Cincinnati. Dr. Gândara has also organized and performed in pedagogically-oriented projects such as "Carmen Miranda" (2010) and “Chiquinha Gonzaga Day" (2013.) Presently, her main project is the Duo Rocha Gândara, a duo of voice and piano, with her husband, Maestro João Rocha. Regarded for his eclecticism and innovative programming, João Rocha has been establishing himself as an exciting conductor, composer, arranger, and pianist in demand with orchestras and musicians in Brazil, the USA, and Europe. He is the founder, music director, and conductor of the Oxford Chamber Ensemble (OCE) and also serves as the Assistant Conductor to the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra (UKSO). Mr. Rocha has appeared as conductor at prestigious venues such as the Carnegie Hall in New York and the city of Prague's Estates Theater. His compositions have been performed and recorded by orchestras and artists from Brazil and the USA. João Rocha develops an intense activity as a composer and chamber music performer with the voice and piano duo, Duo Rocha Gândara. The Duo went on its first European tour in the Summer of 2019 has performed in prestigious venues such as the Reduta Café in Prague and the Palácio Foz in Lisbon. ==IMPORTANT SEATING INFORMATION== Due to COVID 19 social distancing restrictions, we will be selling all shows by the table and not per person. A chart is provided below to help you choose your seat package since selling by the table isn't a feature of the reserved seating chart of Eventbrite. For parties greater than 4 we may be able to place an extra table in a row or put you together in the standing area in the back, but you must call ahead to see if we have the availability for any given show to make it work. $10 drink minimum charged per person in the party if the total for beverages purchased by the party does not meet the minimum. Important Notice #1: If you do not check-in by 15 minutes into the start of the set, we reserve the right to resale your seats with no refund to you. Important Notice #2: All persons entering the cafe must wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth.
