Summary & OverviewIf you have a curiosity or passion to learn more about Backcountry & Uphill Skiing, inside of the ski resort or Backcountry Skiing outside of the ski resort ropes, then the NBS, Tele Mike, Scarpa, 22Designs, Dynafit, and more Backountry Vendors will be hosting a series of backcountry and uphill ski clinics at the 2023 NBS Summit in Vail. Most events are $Free.99 for registered NBS members and $20 for non-registered participants. Participants will learn: (1) What is Uphill Skiing (2) What equipment and clothing are needed, including hands-on demonstrations (3) How to get started in Uphill Skiing Location: SCARPA Tent at the bottom of Golden Peak Race Arena Schedule: Please attend either of the following times. Monday, February 07, 2023 8:30AM - 10:00AM MST What To Bring: If you want to try uphill skiing (skinning)then come prepared to hike a very short distance, less than 300 vertical feet. All uphill equipment will be provided. Avalanche Awareness ClinicFull Circle Everest expedition leader and professional outdoor educator (NOLS) Phil Henderson will be teaching an Avalanche Awareness course. This is a free course that will traditionally cost $1000 or more to get this valuable education. This course will include a short 1.5 hour classroom discussion on day 1 of the course followed by day 2 which will be a day of backcountry skiing and riding while learning and practicing avalanche awareness. Skiers and Snowboarders can both participate. Note: Day 2 of the Avalanche Awareness Training is $Free.99, but you MUST attend Day 1 of Avlanche Training as well. Participants will learn: The why, when and where avalanches happen so you can stay safe while ridingHow to follow the AIARE Framework (American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education) to successfully navigate and ski/ride the backcountryHow to identify avalanche terrainHow to use backcountry safety equipment such as Beacons, Probes, Shovels, and Avalanche BackpacksAnd YES, you will ski and ride low angle backcountry terrain that is NOT avalanche terrainDay 1 Location: Classroom location at Snowmass Convention Center Buttermilk Room Day 1 Schedule: Monday, February 06, 2023 10:30AM - 12:00AM MST Day 1 What To Bring: Nothing is needed for the classroom session. Day 2 Schedule: Tuesday, February 07, 2023 8:00AM - 4:00AM MST Day 2 Location: I-70 to Vail Pass Exit190. Make a sharp right at the Forest Service Shack. Drive less than a quarter mile to the end of the frontage road till it deadends at a circle. Elevate Backcountry will meet you there. Day 2 What to Bring: Come ready to ski or snowboard with all of your own ski and snowboard gear. If possible, bring powder skis and snowboards. Elevate Backcountry will supply all backcountry equipment, if needed. Come dressed and prepared to be outside for 5-7 hours. Bring food and drink for the day as well. Uphill Challenge You will be provided with the experience to participate in the Uphill Ski Racing which is part of the NBS Club Ski Races. SCARPA, 22Designs, Dynafit, and other vendors will provide free demo skis, bindings, boots, and skins to participate in this event. The Uphill Challenge will be timed. Top finishers will receive prizes. If you can walk 1/2 a mile then this fun challenge is for you! Race points will be awarded to your Ski Club for your participation. Skiers Only At This Time: At this time, this event is for skiers only, unless you have your own Splitboard Snowboard to participate. We are working on getting a Backcountry Spitboard Vendor to provide free Spitboard demos for snowboarders. Stay tuned! Participants will learn how to: 1. Get in and out of AT or Telemark Backcountry boots, skis, and skins. 2. Apply and remove climbing skins for walking uphill. 3. Walk (skin) uphill. 4. Transition from climbing skin mode to ski mode and back. Schedule: Tuesday, February 08, 2023, Come anytime between 8:30AM - 3:00PM MST Location: SCARPA Tent at the bottom of Golden Peak Race Arena What to Bring: A small bottle of water. Otherwise, you will ski to the SCARPA and Dynafit Tents at the bottom of Spider Sabich Race Arena. There you will be provided with all of the Uphill ski equipment by the backcountry vendors as well as instructions and plenty of assistance on how to ski up the hill, transition, and ski down the hill. The course will be the approximate distance of the NASTAR race course. SCARPA & 22Designs Telemark Ski ClinicHave you ever wanted to try Telemark Skiing? Tele Mike & Tele Shane will be teaching a Telemark Ski Clinic. Free demo telemark boots, bindings, and skis will be provided. “Free the heel! Free the mind!” Participants will learn the following: 1. How to get in and out of Telemark gear. 2. How to make Tele-pine turns 3. How to make Telemark turns Location: SCARPA Tent at the bottom of Golden Peak Race Arena Schedule: Monday, February 06, 2023 1:00PM - 4:00PM MST Wednesday, February 08, 2023 1:00PM - 4:00PM MST What To Bring: Come dressed and ready to ski along with your lift ticket and Ski Poles. Demo Telemark Boots, Bindings, and Skis will be provided for free. Telemark Ski RacesEveryone knows that the best snow sliders on the mountain are the Telemark Skiers! Because if Telemark Skiing was that easy, it would be called Snowboarding, LOL! Just kidding snowboarder! Telemarkers got jokes! So let's show everyone that the Telemark Skiers can ski just as fast as the Alpine Skiers and Snowboarders, except we ski on our toes because we are built different! Top finishers will receive prizes and add race points to their NBS Club. Free demo Telemark Boots, Bindings, and Skis will be provided for free. Schedule: Tuesday, February 07, 2023 9:00AM - 11:00AM MST Race Logistics: Pick up your Telemark Ski and Boot Demo located at the SCARPA Tent at the bottom of the Golden Peak Race ArenaCome dressed and ready to Telemark Ski Race along with your lift ticket and Ski PolesBackcountry Skiing & Riding with Elevate Backcountry GuidesElevate Backcountry Guides (black owned, NBS Members) will be running guided backcountry skiing and riding days on Vail Pass. These will be snowmobile and mini-ski cat access guided tours. Price: Each day is $200 per person per day Participants will learn the following: How to follow the AIARE Framework (American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education) to successfully execute and ski/ride the backcountry.How to ski/ride the backcountryHow to drive a snowmobile (optional: Only if you want to learn)Location: I-70 to Vail Pass Exit190.
