The AVB Community Band is looking forward to sharing musical favorites of the holiday season when it takes to the stage of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on Monday, Dec. 12, for an evening titled “We Believe in Glad Tidings.” Doors to the Weidner Center, located at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at 2350 Weidner Center Drive, will open at 6 p.m. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Valet parking will be available. Monetary donations will be accepted in the lobby following the concert to support the AVB Community Band’s continuing mission to provide “Music for a Lifetime” for the community. The evening of Christmas favorites is once again sponsored by Bellevue Family Dentistry. ___________ Please note: The AVB Community Band will once again host its annual Christmas collection of canned and dry goods for Paul’s Pantry in Green Bay in the Weidner Center lobby prior to the concert. This is one of Paul’s Pantry’s largest collections of the year. We thank our concert-goers in advance for their generosity! _____________ The 75-member all-volunteer band (AVB) is directed by Mike Ajango and assistant director Paul Oleksy. Two outstanding vocalists will be joining the AVB Community Band in its celebration of the season. Brandon Rockstroh is the choral music director at Green Bay Southwest. In his 13 years there, he has grown the choir program by 240%. In 2016, he was honored as an educator by being named a Golden Apple winner. He has also performed professionally in New York. Amelia Gibbons is a senior at Southwest High School and has performed with numerous theatrical and musical companies. One of her most recent accomplishments was winning the title of “Outstanding Lead Actress” at The Center Stage High School Musical Theatre Awards, where she became a nominee for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards) in New York City. Selections for the evening include “A Christmas Celebration,” “Christmas on Broadway,” “Ode to Greensleeves,” “O Holy Night” and “Stars and Stripes for Christmas.” Following intermission, the percussion section and a single flute will be featured in “Patapan,” a moving and rousing arrangement of the classical French Christmas carol. Other selections include “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” “All is Calm,” “Moonlight Sleighride,” “Away in a Manger,” “I Wish You a Merry Christmas” and “Santa Comes to Dixieland.” The concert concludes with a traditional “Holiday Sing-a-long.” For more information about the concert season, see avbcommunityband.org. The AVB Community Band – formerly the Allouez Village Band – is in its 41st season of entertaining the community. ___________ The first concert of 2023 will be the Sunday, Feb. 19, “Big Band Bash” featuring the 18-piece “AVB Big Band” at the Riverside Ballroom, 1560 Main St., Green Bay. The show begins at 2 p.m. with the dance floor open! The theme of the show is “We Believe in Good Times.” The afternoon is free, but donations will be accepted to support the band’s continuing mission to provide “Music for a Lifetime” for the community. Please note: In the Weidner Center lobby prior to the Christmas concert, tickets will be available for purchase for the chicken dinner being served at the Riverside Ballroom following the Feb. 19 concert.
