Maui News employees represented by the Communications Workers of America union are in the midst of contract negotiations. The employer, West Virginia-based Ogden Newspapers, has engaged in practices that have led to multiple federal allegations of Unfair Labor Practices, and has made a number of proposals that employees have said would be bad for working families and bad for our community.
Those proposals would include allowing Ogden to:
• Outsource ANY job to the Mainland or overseas (from stories and headlines to advertising to customer service).
• Reduce the workweek (and therefore pay) by 20 to 25 percent.
In the past few days they’ve gone even further by censoring letters to the editor. Executives have specifically told employees that the paper will not run letters from Maui County residents expressing support for the workers trying to protect The Maui News and the community it serves.
Now is the time to send a message: The people of Maui County will not accept these proposals or this behavior.
