Description

Join Elmwood’s Assistant Director, Bob Barnett, for this New Year’s Day tour, which will explore Elmwood through the lens of poetry. For as long as there have been graveyards, poems have been written for and about them. The ancient Egyptians carved hieroglyphic poems inside their elaborate pyramid tombs. Roman graveyards are filled with poetry. A graveyard inspired Shakespeare to write his most famous scene (“Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio”). All around Elmwood, there is poetry and reminders of poetry. This tour will include both classic and contemporary works and will look back as well as forward. A traditional New Year’s lunch of pork, greens, and black-eyed peas will be served after the tour in the chapel. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be replaced with a presentation in the chapel, with lunch to follow. Registration is deeply limited; we recommend that you purchase admission soon. This tour will explore themes of death and dying and may not be suitable for everyone.
