At 7 years of age, he immigrated to the United States with his family during the apartheid so that his father could start an electronic engineering business in Philadelphia. By age 16, he began playing with a small Philadelphia-based band. His music is a beautiful blend of indie and folk using instruments like the guitar and banjo. Gregory Alan Isakov grew up in Philadelphia playing in small bands during his free time. After high school, Isakov moved to Colorado to attend Naropa University where he studied horticulture. He continued playing musical instruments throughout college and began playing casual gigs while working as a gardener. His professional music career truly began to take off when he started touring with American musician Kelly Joe Phelps. Gregory Alan Isakov has released seven albums to date, including 2016's Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony where he had the honor of recording with the entire Colorado Symphony. He has been featured over a dozen times in popular media appearances. In 2012, McDonald's used his hit song, Big Black Car, in its commercials. Isakov donated the proceeds from that opportunity to nonprofit organizations that strive to promote maintainable farming communities. His songs have also been featured in several popular TV series, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Blacklist and Californication. When not working on his music, Gregory Alan Isakov spends his free time growing market vegetables and medical cannabis in his garden just outside of Boulder, Colo.
