Tour check-in for this will be held at GHF's 1920 City National Bank Building, 2219 Market St, Galveston, TX 77550. Played out on both land and sea over the course of several hours, the Battle of Galveston, which took place during the early morning hours of January 1, 1863, is widely acknowledged as the most important military event in Galveston’s history. Led by author and historian Ed Cotham, Jr., Learn more about this historic day with historians, tours, and visits to many of the structures still standing today. This year Ed Cotham repeats one of his most requested Civil War tours, which centers on the area around Postoffice Street. Starting at the historic 1920 City National Bank Building on Market Street, this tour will visit the sites of the first two Tremont hotels and tie them together with a host of famous historical figures including Sam Houston and Ulysses S. Grant. Continuing east down Postoffice, the tour will include a variety of Civil War sites and buildings, culminating at the 1861 Custom House and Courthouse where some argue that the Civil War officially came to an end with the raising of the United States flag on June 5, 1865. The tour will conclude at the official Texas battlefield memorial for the Battle of Galveston near the corner of 20th and Postoffice. Ed wrote the text on this monument, which is one of only two such monuments in Texas. ABOUT ED COTHAM, JR. | Ed Cotham is the prize-winning author of many books and articles on Civil War history, emphasizing the battles and skirmishes in Texas. He is also very interested in nautical history and has served as project historian for several important Civil War shipwreck projects. A frequent lecturer on these subjects, Ed also leads occasional tours of Texas battlefields and state historic sites. Ed's research interests also include a wide variety of historical events that took place in and around Texas. One of the most important of these events was the issuance of General Orders No. 3 (the "Juneteenth Order") in Galveston on June 19, 1865.
