Built in 1866, the fort takes its name from Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States. Originally, it was surrounded by water and connected to the land by a narrow walkway. During the American Civil War, Fort Zachary Taylor was the headquarters of a Northern (United States of America) naval squadron, tasked with intercepting ships attempting to bring supplies across the Gulf of Mexico to Southern (Confederate) ports. Locals in Key West often refer to the beach as Fort Zach, and they'll tell you that the crystal-clear waters are some of the best snorkeling in all of Key West.
