Moses was at the end of his rope with the grumbling, disobedient Israelites. Let us recap the series of events leading up to this point: Moses encounters the burning bush, witnesses the plagues poured out on the Egyptians, watches the Red Sea split and then engulf Pharoah's army, eats the Manna from Heaven, drinks the water from the rock, sees God descend on Mount Sinai in a cloud of fire, and receives the Ten Commandments from the Lord. Once Moses leaves the mountain after receiving the commandments, he witnesses the Israelites worshipping the golden calf. In response, Moses' anger burns at what he witnesses, and he smashes the tablets containing the Ten Commandments. Even after their rebellion, God commands Moses to continue leading the people toward the promised land. Moses finds this task impossible to accomplish without the presence of the Lord, so Moses prays, "Lord, show me your glory." Moses could have prayed for strength or for someone else to take the job, but he knew that nothing would be more beneficial to him than a more intimate knowledge of God's glory. The purpose of this conference is to peek into the infinite glory of Jehovah. Like Moses, we need to know the God we serve more intimately. Let us drink from the everlasting fountain of His goodness and marvel at His attributes. Moses did not want to lead Israel, even with the Lord's provision, if the Lord himself was not with the people.
