NEW MUSIC BY COMPOSERS OF OUR TIME AND OF OUR PLACE
For the second concert of their 20th season, Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra (CHICO for short) will premiere music inspired by nature and written by Ventura County composers, Bevan Manson, Pauline Frechette, and Laura Mihalka.
Acclaimed composer, arranger, jazz musician, and teacher, Bevan Manson is known for his concert and jazz compositions often featuring lyrical melodies, complex rhythmic ideas, and rich harmonies and orchestrations. He has received composing commissions from Sierra Chamber Music, Pacific Philharmonic Foundation, the San Francisco Symphony, violist Victoria Miskolczy of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Wilder Trio, and many more.
Manson’s 'Santa Monica Mountains' is an orchestral love letter to the vast and myriad wonders of the lands spanning from the Malibu beaches to mysterious hidden valleys, trails, and endless canyons in the Topanga and Calabasas backcountry.
Laura Mihalka’s Springtime at Stanwood is a three-part piece inspired by watching paragliders jump off Gibraltar Peak in Santa Barbara and land in Parma Park 3000 feet below. “I imagined the anticipation, the jump, the soaring, the relief of landing and the end of a day of comradery with friends. For me, writin¬g modern classical music for a full orchestra has been as exhilarating as jumping off a mountain.”
