The idea started with photojournalist Anthony Soufflé, who got to thinking about wolves after they were removed from the Endangered Species List. “I did some research, learned we had the largest population in the lower 48, and that most wolf research was based on things learned here,” Soufflé recalled. “If wolves were delisted, then their fate would be up to state management, and I thought if the people of Minnesota were going to decide how they were managed, then I felt a duty to give them all the info we could about what the animals are really like.” Anthony pitched the story to editors and was joined in the project by environmental reporter Greg Stanley. Soufflé spent 35 days over the course of 16 months photographing the story. “We went deep into the weeds (literally) with the Voyageurs Wolf Project as they trapped and collared wild wolves. We got to know the wolves at the Minnesota Zoo so well I can call them each over by name. We were invited into pens with Peggy Callahan's wolves at the Wildlife Science Center and were present as they did research in real time. We enjoyed hours of thoughtful conversation with renowned wolf scientist David Mech and watched admirably as curator Lori Schmidt at the International Wolf Center cared for their small pack as snow fell all around them in temperatures well below zero.”Join us for this special night as we celebrate photography.
