Presentation Summary: Timber Structures – Tales of Engineering, Architecture, and Carpentry Structures have been built from timber for thousands of years and engineers have been designing them for over a century. Nothing beats the look of a timber structure when a more mundane structure just will not do. While traditional timber structures are still revered, there is a new timber tradition emerging that is a fusion of traditional timber and mass timber. With the current popularity of mass timber architecture, many structural engineers are finding themselves in the position of designing timber structures for the first time in their career. In many respects, engineering a timber structure is unlike engineering a structural steel or concrete building and it is easy to screw up. This informative and entertaining presentation will describe some of the challenges of timber engineering and how to avoid common pitfalls and mistakes. Jim DeStefano, P.E., AIA, F.SEI is President of DeStefano & Chamberlain, Inc. located in Fairfield, CT. Jim is a founder of the Timber Frame Engineering Council (TFEC), a former President of the Connecticut Structural Engineers Coalition (SEC), has served as a director of NCSEA, and is the past-past-past chairman of the Structure Magazine editorial board.
