Creative founders who are all BU graduates and alums of the Creative Startups AR 789 class will be gathered on this fascinating panel to share where their ideas came from, how they got started, their business models and what they have learned over the years. Come and be inspired! The panel is presented in conjunction with AR789, Creative Startups: From Ideas to Impact, BU’s Arts Administration Graduate Program, The Metropolitan College, and The BUild Lab IDG Student Innovation Center at Boston University. PANELISTS Edoardo Carpenedo, Co-Founder, Bendada Music Festival The Bendada Music Festival (Bendada, Portugal) promotes young talented musicians and organizes concerts and cultural activities in the Beiras, the interior regions of Portugal. The BMF offers an annual Concert Season with high-caliber professional musicians, a Summer Music Academy with classes, masterclasses, and workshops for students from all over the world, and a Concerto Competition. Students have the opportunity to work closely with world-renowned musicians, perform in concerts, play as soloists with an orchestra, and win professional concert engagements. Furthermore, the BMF strives to use music, arts, and education as a medium to bring culture, local pride, and economic growth back into the interior of Portugal. Italian pianist Edoardo Carpenedo impressed audiences in his American debut with “technical strength, sweet and singing tone, and deep sensitivity.” (Charleston City Paper). Edoardo has received numerous awards in national and international competitions, including the prestigious “Trofeo Febo Villani.” He has performed extensively in recital and as a soloist with orchestras around the United States, Europe (most notably in Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, and Spain), and Asia, as well as in a violin-piano duo with his sister, Erica. Edoardo’s latest engagements include performances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Allen Room, The Greene Space at WNYC & WQXR, The Cabot Theater, Tsai Performance Center (USA); Harbin Concert Hall, Qingdao Grand Theater, Ningbo Grand Theater (China); Teatro Comunale Luigi Russolo; and, Auditório Municipal do Seixal (Portugal). Alongside his solo career, Edoardo is an avid chamber musician. He is the founder and artistic director of and pianist for the musical ensemble Virtuoso Soloists (www.virtuososoloists.com). Edoardo’s latest CD release is “Catalogus Galilei,” published by Music Ensemble Publishing Italia in Winter 2018. Mary George, Co-Founder, The Cordial Eye The Cordial Eye is a community arts organization based on the Mid-Cape that strives to use the arts and arts education as a tool for expanding the definition of who belongs on Cape Cod and what it means to be a creative person here. We are dedicated to dismantling systems of oppression in our community by creating space for marginalized groups to amplify their impact in creating a more just and equitable world through gathering, experimentation, exhibitions, and cultural expression. Co-Founder Mary George is a singer, songwriter, music educator, and arts administrator, originally from Brentwood, NY. After close to decade of performing and teaching, she became interested in using the arts as a catalyst for equity and justice, which led her to work as a community arts school administrator. Mary is a deep believer that the superpower of the arts is its ability to lead the human community toward encounter and empathy; both for one another and our own selves. Mary lives on Cape Cod with her husband, Chris, and her two young daughters, Stella Maris and Guadalupe. Andrew Stearns, Co-Founder, New Impressions Print Studio New Impressions Print Studio is a supportive artistic community that provides space and specialized equipment for artists working in the medium of printmaking. We offer an accessible shared studio space where artists can pursue their craft, build community, and educate the public about printmaking. Andrew is pursuing a master’s in Arts Administration at Boston University. He holds a Fundraising Management Certificate from Boston University and a BFA in Printmaking and Art History from Massachusetts College of Art and Design (2013). He served as the vice president of the Boston Printmakers, a national association of professional printmakers for 3 years, and has worked in higher education admissions for the last 9 years. Andrew has interned at Muskat Studios (Somerville, MA) and has taught printmaking classes and workshops at MassArt and in high schools. FACILITATORS Wendy Swart Grossman and Jen Guillemin, Co-founders, Creative Re/Frame Who is Jen? With a background in arts leadership, counseling and teaching, Jen is an arts advocate and creative problem-solver. She has mentored thousands of student-artists and has spearheaded many arts initiatives. She is currently on the Northeastern University faculty, teaching and mentoring art + design students in their world renowned co-op program. Previous to that, she served as inaugural director of the Boston University arts leadership and innovation program, interim director of the BU School of Visual Arts and founding director of the BU Visual Arts Summer Institute. Jen has expertise in higher education administration, building effective partnerships, strategic visioning, curriculum development and cross sector collaboration. Her professional collaborations have led her to teach in prisons and homeless shelters, to create community engaged projects in Boston and to publish research on cultural entrepreneurship and the creative economy. Jen’s passion is to help people identify and focus personal values, creative interests and unique gifts in order to achieve their educational, professional and personal goals. Jen holds a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Geneseo and two master’s degrees in Arts Administration and Counseling from Boston University. Who is Wendy? With a background in US and South African presidential campaigns - clarity, communication and deadlines are Wendy's strengths. As a Creative Practitioner and Consultant, Wendy brings her expertise in building effective partnerships, strategic planning, board development, measurable outcomes, communication, and workshop facilitation to the table. Wendy is a connector, a political and community organizer, a logistical wizard, and a visionary advocate/activist for community building and engagement. She has held positions at Harvard’s Museum of Science and Culture and the Graduate School of Design as well as at The Science Museum in London, UK and scores of NGO’s, non-profits and social impact businesses nationally and internationally. She is also an Adjunct Faculty member at Boston University within their Graduate Arts Administration Program as well as Tuft’s Universities Derby Entrepreneurship Center. Wendy holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from St. Olaf College and a master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Policy from Tufts University.
