When forced to integrate in 1959, the Prince Edward County public school system decided instead to shut down completely. The school board used state funds and grants to establish private schools for white children, while many black children were left with no education for more than five years. Phyllistine Moseley, Chairman of the Lynchburg Juneteenth Coalition, grew up in Farmville during this turbulent time, and shares her story at Old City Cemetery.
