Description
Join us for our Pre-Kwanzaa Workshop learn how to celebrate Kwanzaa in your home with family and friends. Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday created by Dr. Mulana Karenga in 1966.
His goal was to create the first African American holiday. The name Kwanzaa comes from a phrase of Swahili origin, "Matunda Ya Kwanza," and translates as "First Fruits of the Harvest."
The holiday is based on African agricultural rites and communal activities. One of the holiday's main goals is to cause African descendants to reflect on their cultural roots as a source of strength and celebration.
Karenga created Kwanzaa to reaffirm our culture and the bonds between us as a people. Since initially being observed by a few hundred people, Kwanzaa is now celebrated Worldwide. This coommunity workshop aims to teach the principles of Kwanzaa and encourage African Americans to celebrate the cultural holiday and practice the principles throughout the year.
