Description

Safe Sitter® began because of a tragedy: the accidental death of a nurse’s child while being cared for by an adult babysitter. Patricia Keener, M.D. recognized how vulnerable young children are when they’re unprepared providers. So she created a program to teach teens how to be better, safer babysitters. For more than 35 years, Safe Sitter has been a leader in providing life skills, safety skills and child care training for youth. Now a national nonprofit organization with over 900 registered sitters in all 50 states, Safe Sitter continues to help build safer communities by providing youth with the skills they need to be safe while home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. The Safe Sitter course focuses on safety, child care, rescue and business skills. Class content includes: Care of choking infant/child Infant and child CPR Injury prevention/management Safety for the sitter Child care essentials, including diapering practice Behavior management Business skills, including setting fees and screening jobs You can learn more about the program at www.safesitter. Facilitator, Jilian Reece has been teaching Safe Sitter for many years and adores this curriculum. Jilian Reece is the Director of Carter County Drug Prevention. She has a bachelor's degree in communication from ETSU and is a Certified Prevention Specialist II. Her favorite part of her job is working with teenagers because she is confident they are going to make the world a gentler and kinder place as they grow. She also loves teaching about adverse childhood experiences and feels like everyone should know their score and how to build resilience (and their enneagram number too!). She works diligently to empower at-risk youth to change their stories through education, coping strategies and eventual healing. She is the co-host of the "Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" podcast and uses that forum to decrease stigma and help create meaningful relationships among community organizations. Jilian has three precious boys and one amazing little girl who love to play, learn and grow in the Carter County community and she hopes that her work makes that community a better place for them.
