Description
PEABODY, MA — Peabody police are warning residents of an email scam in which they are told their Amazon account is on hold and are asked to click on a link to log in and restore it.
Police are urging residents not to click the link.
The scam says that all orders have been held pending correction of the account because the billing information does not match the account information. It also asked to you to check your credit card billing information and address through clicking on the link.
This "phishing" scam is a common one in which an email that appears to be official is fabricated. Indications that an email is part of a phishing scam are words spelled slightly wrong in the email and a random return email address that does not match what an official corporate email would resemble.
Always call a company through a number other than one provided in the email in question to verify it is authentic before clicking on a link and providing personal information.
