Description
I am appalled and saddened by the events in Washington on January 6, 2021. On a day that should have celebrated our Constitution with an orderly transfer of power, our sacred democracy was threatened by the insurrection that occurred at our Capitol yesterday. An angry mob of terrorists, incited by disgraceful words and actions from the President, violently stormed our nation's Capital in an attempt to overthrow our precious Democracy. There is simply no excuse for these acts, I condemn them and those who committed these atrocious acts should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This episode also exposed the gross underbelly of a racial divide in our country. Contrast the scenes of how some law enforcement treated the mostly white terrorists at the Capitol with the treatment of minority protesters and minority citizens throughout the country. This is our nation's shame. History will not treat the period from January 20, 2017 through January 20, 2021 well. Our nation has suffered through a horrible pandemic that cost over 350,000 lives, many more have lost their homes and their livelihoods, and now we have suffered a violent attack on our sacred Capitol, and our sacred Democracy, by a vicious mob inspired by an un-American, narcissistic President interested in only himself. In order to survive as a Republic and as a Democracy, we have no choice but to start the process immediately. We have only 13 days before we have a new President, but we also need to preserve our Democracy today. While there is a great deal to be angry about, I am also hopeful. I am hopeful that we will now come together and condemn these acts of terrorism on our country and the individuals that carried them out. I am hopeful that a majority of Americans will now realize that this horrific episode in American history is now over and we can begin to heal and move forward. I am hopeful that our nation's leaders will come together and invoke the 25th Amendment or any other steps necessary to remove the President as it is clear that our current President is both unwilling and unable to do his job in order for us to move forward as a nation and towards restoring peace in country and faith in our government. I am hopeful that the historic turnout and fair and just election results, which resulted from the efforts of voting rights activists such as Stacy Abrams, will far outweigh the lies and self-serving propaganda of the President in the history books. And I am hopeful that in these trying times we will do what we do best and rise up as a nation to preserve the Constitution, the Republic of the United States, and all that we stand for and that so many have fought to defend. We are at a critical moment in history. This will not be easy. Much damage has been done. All good citizens have a responsibility to act. I pledge to do all in my power to begin to right the ship of our great country. Will you?
