"Begun in 1875 and completed in 1876, John Jay Adams built an elegant mansion on North Street, opposite Dale Street. Adams was born in 1812 in the Adams homestead on 49 Elm Street. After teaching school for a short time, he went to Taunton and established himself in the brush manufacturing business. He moved his business to Boston and became quite wealthy. He used the North Street mansion as his summer resort. Soon after the completion of the mansion, however, in 1879, he died."
