Package Deemed Not Suspicious; U.S. 41 Reopens Saturday: Police

SARASOTA, FL — All lanes of U.S. 41/South Tamiami Trail reopened around 4 p.m. Saturday after closing due to a suspicious package in the area, Sarasota police spokesperson Genevieve Judge said. The roadway's northbound and southbound lanes were closed between Hillview and Datura streets around 3 p.m. Police went to a FedEx Office building at 1901 South Tamiami Trail to investigate abandoned 9-1-1 calls at 2:11 p.m., Judge said. When they arrived, employees told them that a suspicious package had been delivered at 1:30 p.m. The FedEx Office building and others in the area were evacuated and the roadway was closed to traffic. Officers with the department's Explosive Materials Unit determined the package was not suspicious and cleared the scene, Judge said. No charges are expected.
