NEW YORK CITY — Give it a shot, eligible New Yorkers — a new suite of city-run vaccination sites offer a chance to get your first, or second, life-saving dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Mayor Bill de Blasio this week announced mass vaccination sites will be coming to the five boroughs where New Yorkers can set appointments 24/7 for the coronavirus vaccine. The first two "mega sites" will open Sunday in Brooklyn and the Bronx, as will three vaccine hubs. De Blasio said those locations — and more to come — will be part of an expected 160 sites where New Yorkers can get vaccinated. "We want to make it easy for those in category 1a to get the vaccination," he said. Category 1a encompasses health care workers and nursing home residents and staff. They're the only New Yorkers eligible to receive the vaccine by the state's standard. De Blasio has pressed Gov. Andrew Cuomo to open up vaccinations for people 75 and up and essential workers, but to no avail as yet. Cuomo maintains more health care workers need to be vaccinated, especially in New York City. Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi said New Yorkers can follow a three-step process to get vaccinated. He said the first step is to visit nyc.gov/vaccinelocations to check their eligibility. The second step is to find a location in their borough, he said. The third and final step is to make an appointment, he said. "You navigate through some screens to fill out your own information, your contact information, you select a specific appointment slot, and that's it, you're done," he said. The mass vaccination sites opening Sunday are at Brooklyn Army Terminal Annex Building and Bathgate Industrial Park. La Marqueta in East Harlem and Queens Theatre will house mass vaccination sites in the future, de Blasio said. Officials as of Friday had still yet to announce where in Staten Island the mega site will go. De Blasio said three vaccine hubs will open Sunday and operate seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are: Brooklyn — Bushwick Educational Campus, 400 Irving Ave.Queens — Hillcrest High School, 160-05 Highland Ave.Bronx — South Bronx Educational Campus, 701 St. Ann's Ave. Chokshi said a further 12 hubs will open next week.
