Description

New Horizon School Pasadena is in the process of restoring the parkway that exists on the perimeter of our school. Through a series of community workshops, student involvement, and help from local organizations we'll be building a native habitat garden where our campus interfaces with Orange Grove Blvd and Cypress Ave. Our hope is that by restoring the land that our school is on we will improve our relationships with our living environment and offer a more beautiful and healthy space for neighbors, visitors, and our school community. On December 11th, you will learn from: Levi Brewster, New Horizon Learning Naturalist & One Earth GardenLola Salgado, an Environmental Documentarian and "Bee Amiga"Pasadena Audubon SocietyWe will be planting and teaching about CA native habitat plants. Pasadena Audubon will be talking about why native plants are essential for local birds and Lola Salgado will be talking about CA native bees (there are over 1600 varieties!) and their relationship with native habitat. Everyone is welcome to join these workshops – friends, family, and neighbors! Bring your reusable water bottles, work gloves, hats, closed-toe shoes and break ground with us! Levi Brewster, our Learning Naturalist, has been teaching and working in school gardens for over 15 years and has been at New Horizon School Pasadena for over 4 years. He works on conservation and restoration of wildlands with organizations around LA County including TreePeople, River Project and Amigos de Los Rios as well as local community organizations like Altadena Town Council, Arlington Garden and Altadena Library District to improve our urban environment. He also has a background in the arts with an MFA from the California Institute for the Arts and has received special training from LifeLab, Occidental Arts & Ecology, Permaculture Academy, Responsive Classroom, Conciuos Discipline, Soka Education, and Pedagogy of the Oppressed. My name is Lola Salgado. I call myself a bee amiga! There are so many different types of bees, in beautiful colors and sizes and they all have a very special unique relationship with their flowers and land. Everytime I see a bee I thank them for all they do. They might be small, but are so important to our world. It makes me feel evermore inspired and encouraged to protect and educate about them.
