Healing Ancestral Trauma through Ceremonial Apology

Circle Description: In November 2016, Juan Carlos was called to be part of a powerful spontaneous sacred ceremony in Teotihuacán, Mexico. A series of synchronicities guided him to ask for forgiveness for the historical atrocities his people (the Spanish) committed upon the Aztecs and their land. He will share the story of how he ended up kneeling in front of an Aztec shaman/dancer, surrounded by a circle of Mexican and North American fellow spiritual travelers, and the repercussions that this act has had on his life. Based on this experience, Juan Carlos will lead participants in circle discussion and meditation on how apology and forgiveness can help heal historical and personal trauma. Facilitator Bio: Juan Carlos Areán, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized activist, public speaker, facilitator, and ordained interfaith minister. He works as a Program Director for Futures Without Violence in Boston. Since 1991, he has worked on supporting the healing of men across cultures (especially himself), so they can become better fathers, intimate partners, human beings, and allies to end gender-based violence and achieve gender equity and justice. He is an active trainer, who has led hundreds of workshops and presentations throughout the United States, the Americas, and the Caribbean, as well as in Europe, Asia, the US Congress, and the United Nations in New York and Geneva.
