The Opportunity: Hands Across Long Island, Inc. (HALI) is a behavioral health, non-profit organization founded in 1988; supporting people experiencing life challenges related to mental health, substance use, and trauma. As the only “peer-run” organization of our kind on Long Island, HALI is staffed by people who have personally experienced and lived through these challenges. We offer non-clinical services including supported housing, homeless outreach, employment assistance, community living after incarceration, and self-help. The Position: The Maintenance Specialist is a key member of our close-knit Maintenance Team, which provides overall facilities management for HALI's Recovery Center in Central Islip, as well as multiple Supported Housing scattered sites throughout Long Island (primarily Suffolk County). This position reports to the Maintenance Director. Responsibilities: • Maintain buildings and grounds (e.g., painting, light repairs, and construction) • Snow/leaf removal seasonally • Help move appliances, furniture as needed • Maintain cleanliness of work area • Participate in regular staff meetings and trainings • Other duties as assigned Qualifications: • At least one year of maintenance experience • Maintenance experience in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing is preferred • Organized self-starter who can reliably complete assigned tasks • Experience with basic maintenance/grounds keeping • Knowledge light construction/home repairs, floor buffing a plus • Positive attitude, ability to get along well with others and work as team • Ability to respectfully interact with people who live with mental health and/or life challenge. • Clean and valid driver’s license (HALI vehicle provided to travel to Supported Housing sites) • Reliable transportation to/from work • Physical ability to do active work: standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, lift/move items over 50 lbs.
