Come together this holiday season to celebrate the history of Central City, cooperatives and alternatives to racial capitalism, and opportunities for civic engagement in 2023 with Civic Studio, Cooperation New Orleans, Committee for a Better New Orleans, and Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church No. 2. All ages and backgrounds are welcome! 10 to 10:30 a.m. / Breakfast and Coffee 10:30 to Noon / Legacy of Central City Walking Tour with Nicolas Holmes – visit sites of cultural and civic significance such as the Young Men Olympian Clubhouse, the Kid Ory House, Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home, and the first library for African Americans in the city of New Orleans. We will also be discussing cooperative practices in Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities.(car transport available for anyone unable to walk the route) 10:30 to Noon / Open House at Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church No. 2 – This is an opportunity to learn more about the Legacy of Central City project, worker cooperative Civic Studio and its projects and initiatives, cooperative histories and practices and funding with Cooperation New Orleans and civic issues such as infrastructure planning and equity with Committee for a Better New Orleans. We will also be sharing opportunities to get involved in cultural, civic, environmental stewardship, and research/art projects in 2023. Noon to 12:30 p.m. / Young Fellaz Brass Band -- Wrap up the morning and celebrate the holiday season on South Rampart St. with a special musical performance by one of New Orleans’s premier brass bands and other musical guests! Each participants will be able to take home a copy of the newly published Legacy of Central City Activity Book, Vol. 1. The rain date for this event is Sunday, 12/11 (in the afternoon). Tickets are free, but we welcome donations in support of the Legacy of Central City project and future volumes of the activity book.
