Description
The celebration of activism and vision for a better world will be held at the Roosevelt Community Center at 6 PM on the 74th anniversary of International Human Rights Day, on Saturday, December 10 at 6 PM. Internationally acclaimed iconic human rights leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers Dolores Huerta will be keynote speaker. Dolores Huerta helped organize the 1965 Delano strike of 5,000 grape workers and was the lead negotiator in the workers’ contract that followed. In 1973, she led another consumer boycott of grapes that resulted in the ground-breaking California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, which allowed farm workers to form unions and bargain for better wages and working conditions. Throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, Dolores worked as a lobbyist to improve workers’ legislative representation. During the 1990s and 2000s, she worked to elect more Latinos and women to political office and has championed women’s issues. The recipient of many honors, Huerta received the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1998 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. As of 2015, she was a board member of the Feminist Majority Foundation, the Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America, and the President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. This 20th annual celebration of the vision, values, and achievements of Human Agenda will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Human Agenda co-founder Wendy Greenfield. A lifelong human rights leader, Wendy has worked alongside Dolores for over 40 years to bring justice to farmworkers. The celebration will also present its DECKS Awards to outstanding leaders and organizations in our community: Democracy to Somos Mayfair, Equity to Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021, Cooperation to Pangea Legal Services, Kindness to the Rev. Jethroe Moore III, and Sustainability to Sunrise Silicon Valley. The Roosevelt Community Center is located at 901 E. Santa Clara Street, San Jose, CA 95116 (drive north on 21st street and park in the back of the community center). For more information contact Natiana Day at [email protected] or 626-242-4279.
