Originally released by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five on July 1, 1982, "The Message" was the birth of socially conscious hip hop. The presentation by Grandmaster Melle Mel and Hip Hop Historian JayQuan will serve as an overview of Melle Mel’s impact on rap music in general, but socially conscious rap specifically.
