Description

Join Elevated Chicago -- members of our steering committee, leadership council, working groups and community tables, plus our program staff -- for our fifth symposium on equitable transit-oriented development, or ETOD. This gathering is sure to be special -- it happens after the July 2022 passage of Chicago's first ETOD ordinance, and it's our first in-person symposium since 2019. We hope you can make time to be with us in person for all, or part, of the day, and to celebrate how far we've taken ETOD in Chicago since SPARCC (the Strong, Prosperous And Resilient Communities Challenge) jumpstarted our work six years ago. Here's an overview of our agenda and panel descriptions. This policy win was the result of years of advocacy and collaboration among leaders from the City of Chicago and the Elevated Chicago coalition. In this panel, leaders behind the provisions of the Connected Communities ordinance will talk about what it took to develop the ordinance, what are some of its early implementation highlights, and what it will take to make the Connected Communities promise a reality. Speakers Facilitator: Kendra Freeman, Vice President, Metropolitan Planning Council Phil Beckham, Managing Partner, P3 Markets LLC Liz Butler, Partner, Taft, Stettinius & Hollister Christian Diaz, Housing Director, Palenque LSNA Marisa Novara, Commissioner, Chicago Dept. of Housing Session 2: Building an ETOD model: What’s happening locally and nationally Time: 2:30pm to 4:30pm? (75 min) Thanks to community advocates, governmental supporters and philanthropy champions, the ETOD movement is blooming not only in Chicago, but in cities across America, too. In this panel, leaders at the forefront of the movement reflect on why equitable development connected to transit is expanding across the nation, the critical role of coalition-building, and lessons learned in different cities as ETOD leaders develop innovative programs, financial tools and bricks-and-mortar projects. Speakers Facilitator: Mike Davidson, Senior Director of Community Impact, The Chicago Community Trust Nina Idemudia, Chicago Recovery Plan Director, Chicago Dept. of Planning and Development Laurie Ouding, Founder, Food Matters Jacob Vallo, Sr. Director of Transit-Oriented Development and Real Estate, MARTA (Atlanta) Kelley Brookins, Regional Administrator, Federal Transit Authority Session 3: What’s next: Elevated Chicago in 2023 Last year, Elevated Chicago adopted its 2022-2024 Workplan, outlining People, Place and Process priorities. After reflecting on 2022 highlights, this conversation will focus on what’s coming in the next two years, from Elevated Chicago’s bricks-and-mortar investments to its Community Tables work, to the rollout of Elevated Works, a new initiative launched in collaboration with the Center for Neighborhood Technology. You will learn about our national and citywide work coming up, and about the neighborhood-based work that our Community Tables are planning.
