MARYLAND — Hospitals in Maryland have more coronavirus patients than at any point during the pandemic, according to state health data released Friday, Jan. 8. It is the second time this week coronavirus hospitalizations hit a record high. Maryland's hospitals are treating 1,885 patients for the coronavirus, officials said Friday, Jan. 8. The state also hit a record — with 1,862 patients in Maryland hospitals — Wednesday, Jan. 6. Intensive care units in Baltimore City hospitals are at 90 percent capacity, Health Commissioner Letitia Dzirasa said during an update Friday. In Montgomery County hospitals, the ICUs are at 93.3 percent capacity, according to the latest report from the local health department, dated Thursday, Jan. 7. Prince George's County reports 44.8 percent of its ICU beds are occupied. Carroll Hospital has 38 COVID-19 positive patients, and Carroll County reports more than 10 COVID-19 patients creates a "significantly increased impact" on its hospital system. Anne Arundel County ICUs have 135 patients, the highest since April 21, when there were 138. Baltimore County reports 184 patients are hospitalized as of Jan. 7. Not all other jurisdictions provide hospital utilization data. Hospitalizations have seen an uptick since Halloween, with spikes after Thanksgiving and Christmas. Coronavirus vaccines began to be administered in the state the week of Dec. 14, and so far, officials say 111,760 people have received the first dose. The vaccine to prevent COVID-19 requires two doses, and nearly 3,000 people have received that one.
