Coronavirus Curfew Extended In Newark As Cases Rise

NEWARK, NJ — Newark is extending its mandatory, citywide curfew for nonessential businesses and some residential neighborhoods until at least Feb. 1, city officials recently announced. For nonessential businesses, there will be a nightly curfew of 8 p.m., which ends at 5 a.m. For certain zip codes – 07104, 07105, 07107 and 07114 – there is a mandatory 9 p.m. curfew on weekdays and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Exceptions are made for people traveling to or from work, or those experiencing an "emergency." Newark officials released the following statement on Friday via social media: "Ten months after the City of Newark's first confirmed case of COVID-19, it continues to be a contagious, and at times fatal, respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. With our positive cases still on the rise, despite all of the recent measures we have implemented, including adhering to State Executive Orders and implementing the COVID-19 Winter Outdoor Dining Requirements, (effective through March 31, 2021), Holiday Plan (effective through January 8, 2021), the need to again extend the curfew is essential. Although vaccines have been and are being developed at a pace never experienced in this nation's history, and are being administered to essential workers, we cannot become complacent or lax in our fight against the virus – we must continue to be vigilant in wearing our masks, practicing social distance, washing hands frequently, and getting tested frequently."
