The program will include the Pacific Northwest premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s Wounded Children (2020), the world premiere of Mikhail Johnson's From the Playground (2022), as well as works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Grant Still, and Eric Dolphy.
Featuring artwork by Laurie Davenport inspired by the music to be shared, the program will be a celebration of themes of childhood and dance.
Refreshments from black-owned Tacoma business Trini Plate will add a delicious dimension to the event.
A poem by Lucille Clifton serves as inspiration for the program:
Listen Children
Listen children
keep this in the place
you have for keeping
always,
keep it all ways
We have never hated black
Listen
we have been ashamed
hopeless tired mad
but always
all ways
we loved us
We have always loved each other
children all ways
Pass it on
