Soccer legend, activist and writer Lilian Thuram joins UVA's Karsh Institute of Democracy for a screening of World Cup matches followed by a discussion of his experiences as an athlete and activist and the role of sport in democracy. Thuram was a key player on the French national soccer team during its World Cup win in 1998—scoring two goals in the semi-final—and played for Monaco, Juventus and Barcelona during his professional career. Throughout his career, he used his iconic status as an athlete to speak out against racism. After retirement, he created the Lilian Thuram Foundation for Education Against Racism, working with schools on anti-racist curricula and sponsoring and curating exhibits, including one at the Quai Branly in Paris. He is the author of three books, two of which have recently been translated into English: "My Black Stars: From Lucy to Barack Obama" and "White Thinking: How Racial Bias is Constructed and How to Move Beyond It."
