Pre and post-course materials to obtain credit for the live course.INSTRUCTIONS TO FIND REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS: In PTSU, you can find the required pre and post-course materials for the live course by searching: "PTSU - Exercise Prescription for Acute Care and Inpatient Therapists Live course materials 2022" What to bring: - Writing utensil - Water bottle - Computer if you prefer taking electronic notes - Name Tag What to wear: -Comfortable lab clothes/Casual -PT Solutions Gear if you have some Provided to you: - 6 slides per page print out of power point - Electronic version of power point slides Course Description: As evidence continues to evolve, it is imperative for clinicians to be able to assess current status of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurologic systems, co-morbidities, and risks to activity/exercise to develop an appropriate plan of care for patient progression in the inpatient and acute care settings.  This course work with provide research and evidence related to best practices to evaluate the patient’s systems along with evidence to guide appropriate dosing, frequency, intensity, and load within an individual treatment sessions and plan of care in the inpatient and acute care settings. Learning Objectives: Physical Therapist Understand the physiologic changes that occur due to best rest and hospitalization Understand and perform assessment of vital signs and how to utilize for dosing and intensity in the hospital setting Develop a plan of care with appropriate patient education and exercise to address strength, power, aerobic capacity, gait, and balance for patient’s in the acute and inpatient settings Understand the fundamental aspects of motivation and patient engagement to improve patient compliance Understand common myths related to exercise in the acute care and inpatient settings, along with evidence to contradict At the conclusion of the course, the physical therapists will be able to... Properly verbalize understanding of exercise techniques and interventions for individuals hospitalized for acute illness and/or injury. Interpret pertinent clinical findings to the physical therapist and verbalize expected patient response to exercise interventions. Be able to communicate reasons related to advancing or reducing the plan of care to fully address all phases of exercise (strength, power, aerobic, gait, and balance) to supervising occupational therapist Demonstrate a verbal role play example of how to utilize motivational techniques to improve patient compliance Intended Participants: PT Solutions clinical employees include Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapist, and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants. The Physical Therapist Assistants and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistances must understand that these skills should not be delivered without supervision of the Physical Therapist for Physical Therapy Assistants and Occupational therapist for Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants, and they will not be expected to deliver or administer advanced manual skills. Methods of Instruction: 10.5 hours in total – 2.5 hour allocated to pre-reading from journals of education and learning as calculated by the Mergener formula and 8 hours allocated to didactic, lab and manual techniques. Exercise dosing techniques will be performed under supervision; medical difficulties should be relayed to the instructor prior to course. Method of instruction: 70% lecture and participation in clinical concepts, work in group for logical progression and problem solving. 30% lab including: testing and assessment, hands-on treatment, vital sign monitoring, and role-playing case scenario’s, with peer supervision and feedback.
