My philosophy is "Everything I ever needed to know about business I learned on the sports field." From Behind The Scoreboard, I feature the sports stories that tell us much more than simply who won or lost. These personal and inspiring experiences of grade school, high school, college, other amateur and even pro athletes allow all of us to reflect a little more on what is important in life. ~ James C. Metzger, Chairman and CEO, Whitmore — The Agency _______ Broken Sticks Get New Life For New Purpose Recover, recycle and reuse has taken on some interesting programs. Here’s one that caught my eye—giving new life to broken hockey sticks. Requip’d is an organization that partnered with teams (from USA Hockey, NHL, AHL, ECHL and the NCAA) and manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada to not simply recycle but to upcycle old sticks to create barbeque sets. About a year ago, the operation was sold to ABLE Force (Richboro, Pennsylvania), a nonprofit that employs adults with special needs. The mission is to continue to repurpose tossed hockey sticks into unique items that also include bottle openers, snow brushes, plungers and a goalie paddle ring toss game. The partnership between the organization, which provides employees with meaningful jobs, and the leagues is a win-win. USA Hockey has supplied more than 5,000 sticks. Add that number to the countless additions made by the college and pro leagues. Now, that’s taking a great shot to the top shelf. Read more in my blog.
