Course Summary - Autism Strategies and Neurodiversity Affirming Practices (Feb 2) This course will outline how to support autistic children by using neurodiversity-affirming language and writing strengths-based goals. There will also be an overview of the key features of autism in young children, a comparison of how girls on the spectrum present differently from boys, along with goals and strategies to facilitate acquisition of the five key foundation skills that need to be addressed in therapy and early childhood classrooms. The therapeutic strategies addressed in this course do not focus on establishing compliance or fixing deficits identified on standardized tests, but rather on helping autistic children learn how to learn through shared social interactions with the important people in their world. Participants will leave this training with a plan for creating learning environments for autistic children designed to facilitate communication, language, and self-regulation. Course material appropriate for Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Educators, parents/caregivers, Early Interventionists, students in the aforementioned areas of study. Learning Outcomes: As a result of this training, participants will be able to: 1. Explain what makes a program or professional “neurodiversity affirming.” 2. Summarize the key features of autism in young children and how girls on the spectrum present differently from boys. 3. List and describe five key learning to learn foundation skills that are often missing or inconsistently displayed in autistic children. 4. Define what robust AAC is and provide examples of low-tech and high-tech robust AAC options. 5. Modify traditional therapy goals into neurodiversity affirming therapy goals. Course Summary - Making Sense of Sensory (Feb 3) This course will provide an overview of the external and internal sensory systems along with observable characteristics of sensory dysregulation. The way young children take in, process, and respond to sensory information significantly affects the way they learn, develop, and behave. Occupational therapists are the professionals who treat sensory processing disorder, but all early childhood teachers, therapists, and parents need to understand how to support children with sensory differences. Course material appropriate for Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Educators, parents/caregivers, Early Interventionists, students in the aforementioned areas of study. Learning Outcomes: As a result of this training, participants will be able to: 1. List the eight sensory systems and describe the relevance of the three power senses. 2. Define the terms self-regulation, co-regulation, and dysregulation. 3. Describe the 3-step formula for supporting children with social learning differences. 4. Explain how unmet sensory needs can contribute to challenging behaviors. 5. Summarize how to create sensory-rich learning opportunities to support young children with sensory differences.
