Description
Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 at 2PM Join us at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center for a fun afternoon filled with Nevada history. We'll begin the afternoon with a talk by author and historian Stan Pahrer about Nevada's ghost towns, many of which were originally mining towns. After Stan's talk, you'll have a last chance to view the Nuggets: Short Stories About Nevada Mining exhibit before it comes down the following week. Stan will be sharing photos from his historical photo collection along with stories of Nevada's mining and ghost towns. Stan will also have a selection of books for sale and will be signing books at the event. Nuggets: Short Stories About Nevada Mining is an exhibit featuring more than 100 historical photos and documents from the University Libraries Special Collections and University Archives. You'll learn about the people, places and technology of Nevada's mining history. You can read more about the exhibit here. Free parking is available in the Brian Whalen parking garage and is just a short walk to the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. Stan's talk will take place in the Wells Fargo Auditorium and the Nuggets exhibit is located throughout floors 1, 2 and 3 of the Knowledge Center. This event is co-hosted by the University Libraries, UNR's Nevada Legacy Society and the College of Liberal Arts History Department. Native Nevadan Stanley Paher (MA, University of Nevada ’69) is the author of 19 books on Nevada, Arizona, and California. He has written ten other books as well as scores of magazine articles. His first book, Nevada Ghost Towns & Mining Camps, issued in 1970, has seen 14 printings and continues to be a favorite of Nevada explorers young and old. Paher’s firm, Nevada Publications, has published 96 books written by a variety of authors. Over the last forty years he has influenced every part of the Nevada book universe—as author, publisher, editor, book distributor, marketing consultant, and informal advisor to an untold number of budding authors, both literary and commercial. Recently someone said his epitaph might read, “If you seek Stan’s memorial, look around you.” In the 1980s Paher’s business was described by one observer: “Loading up his green 15-year old Jeep Wagoneer with a supply of books, off he goes, following the routes of early animal-driven freighters and stages, through the deserts of the Southwest, visiting general stores and gift shops in small towns. He sees old-timers, swaps stories, sells books, and searches for out-of-print books as well. Sometimes he might trade books for a rare volume containing Nevada material. This was one way that he acquired the largest private collection of Trans-Mississippi West books, including numerous first editions dating back as far as John Fremont’s report to Congress in 1845. Now in the 21st century, Paher in his Jeep Trail Hawk will carry some book orders to museums and retail outlets en route to a camping and hiking adventure in rural Nevada’s high canyons. He constantly explores back roads and dim trails in order to update his Nevada Desert Atlas, ensuring current accuracy. As author-publisher, collector of rare books, maps, and photographs, Stanley Paher has kept alive the history, lore, and spirit of Nevada and the Southwest.
