Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a strange and beautiful mushroom long known as a delicious edible, as well as a powerful and extraordinary medicinal, supporting brian function, mood, gut health, and more. In Japan it is known as "Yamabushitake", meaning "those who sleep in the mountains", after the Yamabushi Buddhist monks who wear robes resembling the fruiting body. Shaolin monks in China are storied to have drank Lion's Mane tea before meditation to improve concentration. In this 3-hour workshop we will explore this amazing mushroom with "head, heart, and hands", tasting Lion's Mane tea, discussing its natural history, traditional uses, folklore, and research findings, and then diving in and making our own Lion's Mane "mini-farm"s to take home. The class is suitable for any level of experience, beginners welcome. Mushroom tea will be served. You are invited to bring a potluck item to share with the group during our class break. Class limited to 24. The workshop will be taught by Cynthia East Skovlin, a mycologist for over 30 years, and the founder of Dream Farm Mushrooms in Point Reyes, CA . NOTE: COVID-19 precautions will be observed at all times during the workshop. Please bring a mask. Masks are required in the classroom for those who are not vaccinated. In addition, while in common areas of the Dance Palace building, masks are required for all attendees, regardless of vaccination status.
