SAN RAMON, CA — Voters will soon know official election results or whether there will be runoff races for Contra Costa sheriff/coroner or district attorney. (Scroll down for real-time results.) The registrar of voters may have additional mail-in and provisional ballots to count over the next several days, and the results have not yet been certified. For the sheriff, district attorney, and other local races, if a candidate receives 50 percent of the vote plus one they will win outright. Otherwise, the top two vote-getters will face off on the November ballot. Early results showed Sheriff David Livingston in the lead for sheriff/coroner. As of 10:30 p.m., Livingston had 64,339 votes. Candidate Ben Therriault had 41,233. Diana Becton was in the lead for for the county district attorney position with 61,203 votes. Candidate Mary Knox had 45,910. Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan lead in the 16 district with 28,704 votes. Candidate Joseph Rubay had 12,482. There were plenty of other contested races in Contra Costa County. As of April, the California Secretary of State reported that 26,948,297 Californians were registered to vote, which accounts for almost 82 percent of the state's eligible voting population. There are far more registered Democrats than Republicans in the state, with 46.75 percent for the former and 23.92 percent for the latter. GOP registration in the state has been dropping steadily, a trend that shows no sign of slowing down even as Republican registration climbed at the national level over the last year. Voter turnout was not expected to be as high this primary season, especially without highly competitive statewide races. Click here to track your ballot and make sure it is counted.
