Description

COMMUNITY QUILTING FOR A CAUSE Quilt Drive to Benefit Texas Youth Displaced by Domestic Violence In the state of Texas, an estimated 184 children are confirmed victims of domestic violence each day. An estimated 43.7% of domestic violence survivors are denied shelter due to lack of space each year. Jonathan’s Place provides residential care, foster care & adoption services, and transitional housing to Texas youth; from newborns to age 18. Additionally, they are the only organization in Dallas County that provides residential services to children under the age of 5. Due to the nature of scenarios that would lead to a child being placed in emergency housing, many arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs. Quilting is a tradition built on community coming together for the benefit of others. We hope to provide an opportunity for members of our community, many of whom may themselves be survivors of domestic violence, to share the gift of comfort, security, and care a quilt provides to these children. “Quilts have always represented love, comfort, and care. It's a tradition that transcends class, race, and culture. Those of us who are fortunate to have a family quilt passed down to us understand the significance they can hold. When I see my grandmother’s quilt I can feel her presence and warmth. We hope we can provide that same feeling to the recipients of these quilts.” —Jessica Bermudez, Owner, Stitchhouse Plano On June 2, 3, & 4, 2022, we will open the doors of Stitchhouse to community members of all skill levels and abilities to stitch together as many quilts as can be produced in that time. There will even be stations for those with no prior sewing or quilting experience to contribute to the project. Stitchhouse’s ‘Stitch + Together: Quilts for Kids 2022’ will be a come & go event from 10:30a to 4:00p for the three days of the event. All equipment and materials, as well as lunch, drinks, and snacks, will be provided. Those who wish to participate off-site, donate completed quilts*, materials and other supplies, or donate food, snacks, or other provisions for participants are asked to make arrangements by email at [email protected].
