Chabot Shines In Sprints, Pole Vault at CCCAA State Meet

Chabot blazer Zharia Dixon had two top-five finishes at the CCCAA State Track and Field Championships at Mt. SAC in Walnut. The former East Bay Athletic League sensation was third in the 100 meters in a time of 11.93 seconds and fifth in the 200 (25.21)."Zharia Dixon had a phenomenal day," Chabot coach Kyle Robinson said, adding that Dixon, a Dublin High graduate, is set to sign with CSU San Bernardino.Chabot also had a big highlight in the pole vault, as Andie Aymond broke her own school record with a mark of 11 feet, 3 3/4, finishing third.Robinson was thrilled with the season overall, especially because it gave athletes who waited out the COVID lost season a chance to shine on a big stage."We had a great year, awesome, a lot of strong performances. ... It was great to seem them finally have a chance to compete for Chabot," he said, aware that many of his top competitors will be transferring to four-year schools.Chabot was also bolstered in the women's sprints by Giovanna Duley's eighth in the 200 (25.80) and Masina Mayo's seventh in the 100 (12.15). Ariana Chavez was seventh in the 800 in a time of 2:22.92.The Chabot women finished tied for 16th in the team standings with 21 points.Men's track and fieldThe Chabot men's 4x100-meter relay team blazed to a fourth-place finish at the CCCAA State Track and Feld Championships at Mt. SAC in Walnut.The unit of Zion Mayo, Shamil Youngblood, Devin Walker and Obinna Elendu was timed in a season-best of 41.22 seconds.Mayo also finished ninth in the 100 (10.58), improving his season-best time, and eighth in the 200 (22.14).Nico Melendres was sixth in the 800 (1:53.78) after entering the big meet with the No. 2 time in the state of 1:51.49. Jacob Lawrence, who has signed with Portland State, was seventh in the 5,000 (15:12.57).The Chabot men's team finished tied for 18th in the team standings.
